Happyfeet: I'm certainly glad that I had mine done 😀, and it's obviously good to know that Dave's operation has gone well 😀. I wasn't trying to put anyone off 😮 - for anyone thinking about knee replacement, I was really trying to point out that if their X-rays are no worse than mine, then partial replacement might be a possibility. The main advantage of partial replacement over total replacement (to my way of thinking at least) is that the result is more like a normal, natural knee (but there are disadvantages too).

Glad they managed to sort you out M1960, i know it’s not an op to undertake lightly, just happy to see Dave in good spirits and on the mend 😀

Happyfeet: I was quite bow-legged (varus malalignment) ☹ before the surgery, and partial replacements are technically more difficult than total replacements.

I was there for some of the days on the 2016 Langdale invite (struggling badly with the descents 😮, although that was due to thighs and feet rather than knees) – sorry that I don't remember you Dave. 🤔

Yes, one week apart sounds a bit strange. Some people have them done together, which would have been my preference, but my surgeon wasn't in favour of this – he said it's like hitting yourself round both sides of the head at the same time 😮 and, particularly in view of my medical history, he felt the risk with a longer anaesthetic was greater than with two shorter ones. He said he would normally leave three months between the operations, but he did my second one sooner because I had made a quick recovery, he was going abroad for a conference, and he was concerned that if he left it much longer and it got much worse then he would have to carry out a total replacement.

Congratulations, and I wish you a speedy recovery! 🙂 I had partial replacements (medial resurfacing) and patella osteophytectomies in 2014 (the left knee in April and the right knee in June). It was a third opinion who offered me partial, rather than total, replacements, and from what he said afterwards, I think my knees were probably at about the limit of feasibility for partial replacements due to the difficulty he had pulling my legs into realignment to insert the plastic bearings. Anyway, they have been very successful, although I was strongly advised not to run, which is a pity as road running was my main hobby. I'll upload 'before and after' X-rays in case they are of interest.

For those who don't know me, it's a knee replacement not an accident. All going to plan so far. Hope to be posting walks again next year.
