Don't know how to read a map and navigate from it? Wish you did? Join me on Saturday 14th February in Bristol to get a grip on the basics. It's free, and you'll get some fresh air and a little exercise. Other dates may be available.
I am a mountain guide (registered with the Mountain Training Association as a Mountain Leader), an NNAS-qualified navigation instructor, and a Duke of Edinburgh instructor for hiking expeditions. I love teaching navigation at all levels, from complete beginner, to training future mountain guides in advanced techniques.
On this beginners' session we'll look at:
• map symbols
• how to hold the map
• demystifying the compass and what it can do for you
• distance on the ground and distance on the map
• demystifying contours: visualising slope and height
... and if there's time we'll look at:
• working out where to go next when you do know where you are
• working out where you are when you're not sure ("relocation")
Maximum six participants; minimum: two; participating children of participants are welcome.

I definitely wish I could read a map! Demystify the compass - that too!
ElElliewalkerToo far for me at the moment, maybe another time.
Yes…. I’d like to learn how to do that 👍🏻😊
AnneAs of 8-40 pm on 15th January, two people have indicated that they will attend, which means we now have the minimum number for it to go ahead. There are four more places available.
Hello. I'm sorry I haven't posted my interest on this page yet, as you requested. The website didn't say I had any messages! On the train Bristol TM is about 30 mins for me and my local station is 5-10 mins walk. Ashton Court could be 1.5 hours drive. It's your prerogative to set the terms that work for you but 9am is not going to be doable for me.
SSauntererSaunterer: Traveline has a solution: A1 bus from the Centre end of Anchor Rod (dep. 0820), then change to X4 bus at Clanage Road (dep. 0840), which takes you to the UWE campus near the meeting point. However, the bus change at Clanage road has only a 1-minute gab between the A1 arriving and the X4 leaving.
Saunterer: Hi I can pick you up from anywhere in Bristol to get to Ashton Court.i am driving anyway. bob
Bah WobbleAh ok sorry for the delay again. Fortunately I have met Mr Wobble in a former life and know him to be a decent man so he can pick me up from Bristol TM I reckon.
SSauntererSaunterer: super!
on 08/02/26 @ 10:29The weather forecast for Bristol for Saturday is cold and sunny. Because this is a beginners' session, we will be spending the first part of the morning indoors in the café, but when we do go outside, we will not be walking far or vigorously, and there will be a lot of standing around, so please dress very warmly.
Hi…. I’m very sorry but unable to make Saturday 14th in Bristol…. Due to work…. Hope all enjoy it.
AnneAs of Wednesday evening, we have two participants (Bjg and Bah Wobble), which is the bare minimum for the event to go ahead.
blue_voyager: Hi I have friend who does foraging who is interested, I hope its OK to invite her. Bob
Bah WobbleBah Wobble: yes, absolutey!
on 12/02/26 @ 21:21Thank you to all those who attended. I was asked to provide a list of what we covered:
• maps for different purposes; coverage and physical size
• scale; home printing and preserving scale
• symbols
• correct way of holding
• contour interpretation and limitations of contours
• measuring angles with a compass on the map and on the ground
• I mentioned but we did not cover magnetic variation (deviation).
• measuring distance on the map using the romer, and on the ground by pacing
• We discussed but did not practise timing.
• working out where we were (relocating) at two similar features
• walking on a bearing: how and why, and why not
blue_voyager: thanks Brendon, I benefited a lot from your course.
Bah WobbleI assume you would like feedback.
I got confused with setting the bearing, the first stage didn't need the magnetic qualities of compass, I now understand it more having thought that through.
Best wishes bob
Thank you for your feedback. I'm glad it is all clear now.
