Pear Drop (Sarah): and Lanky, agree with you both as did this trip a few years ago but one way from Ft. William to Mallaig then ferry to Inverie and hiked back, wild camping on route. Would be tempted to do again as weather turned bad and could not walk intended ridges. There are also bothys on the route we took but did not use them. The walk was excellent as were the barbecued wild brown trout!

Please take a look at my other tentative enquiry (there are 2 on the forum)

I'd be totally up for this- love the west of Scotland!

Hi Mitch, both this and Settle/Carlisle are lovely scenic lines and this would be a really nice day out if you are into steam trains. On the down side the steam trains are more expensive, you can't stop and get off halfway, and there are liable to be huge groups of Americans with massive cameras leaning across you to get a better view. Personally I'd rather use the normal service trains, maybe get some sort of day ranger hop on/off ticket, do some walking in amongst. I had my 40th birthday party on a normal scheduled service train on the Settle-Carlise, full buffet, a butler and a visit from Santa, it was great!! 🙂
