Simple walking rules......

by BJ Blue John

In a recent issue of a walking magazine, a reader shared some simple rules for fellwalking after visiting the Lakes, amongst which were:

Always know where you are

Don’t think the first mountain you see is the one you’re aiming at

Ditto….. or the second

Don’t try to make the terrain fit the map…. the terrain is always right!

If you think you are going in the wrong direction…you probably are

If you’ve got the map, your walking companion thinks you know where you are going

Whatever happens there will be a pub dinner at the end of it

---------------------------

Does anyone have a simple walking rule of their own to add to these????

FL; only just seen your comment as I have been in Normandy with no laptop.
For the last few hundred feet up a mountain you are saying to yourself "How much furthur?" Many mountains also have several false tops, and you get to one only to find there is more climbing. My altimeter helps, but I have noticed that if you are arriving at a false summit, when you look directly up, the clouds do not seem to move much. When you are going up the final, true summit, the cloud seems to move horizontally relative to the mountain.
I don't know how this works, but it could be that when you are almost on top you are closer to the cloud base so the impression of movement is greater.
Anyone else seen this?

Don't worry if you are a kleptomaniac...you can always take something for it 😋

Forever lost 27/09/2013 19:03

Any woman who says size doesn't matter is shallow !!!!!!! lol

colinjoseph 27/09/2013 16:22

You are getting near the summit of a mountain when the clouds seem to be moving quickly immediately above you.

Gosh Tearoom, that bloke Confucius knows, he must be well-endowed, do you have his number? 😀😀😋😋😋😀😀

Pear Drop (Sarah) 25/09/2013 21:51

Thank you, what a lovely thing to say 🙂🙂 I look at every morning as a brand new start now, life is so exciting specially since I joined OD 🙂

Dolly Parton (of all people!) came up with one of my favourites - "if you want to see the rainbow, you have to put up with the rain" 🙂🙂

Blue John 25/09/2013 21:38

But here's another for you "Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now & make a brand new ending" 🙂🙂

Blue John 25/09/2013 21:28

Sorry Sarah, I didnt write the words but have found many lovely quotes like these & save them from time to time.In my own words what I can say is that in thgose 3 yrs you have come a long way with the support of friends & family but also with your enthusiasm & fun you inspire many others too 🙂🙂

Pear Drop (Sarah) 25/09/2013 20:00

Aw BJ. Why didn't I know you 3 years ago when I was a mental wreck. You are inspirational. God bless you 🙂🙂

Blue John 25/09/2013 16:20

Nobody trips over a mountain. It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path & you will find you have crossed the mountain 🙂

Pear Drop (Sarah) 25/09/2013 13:08

Well said BJ, even when the path is a bit rough 🙂🙂

Blue John 25/09/2013 12:18

If you are facing in the right direction, all you have to do is keep on walking in order to reach your dreams 🙂

Blue John 09/09/2013 18:40

I think HPM ably directed by Deka & myself made a good job of the three day pub crawl 🙂

The Mind is Willing 09/09/2013 12:21

Or just lead a pub crawl!!!! 😈😈😈😈😈😈

preggy47(Andy) 09/09/2013 12:09

you need to share your extensive knowledge of map reading pubs with us all john.

Blue John 26/08/2013 22:07

The first thing they taught us on my navigation course was identification of symbols for landmarks & I memorised the pub one as being the most useful 🙂

Blue John 26/08/2013 18:51

Dont worry about map reading, there is always someone in the group that knows the location of the nearest pub 🙂😋

BustaGut (Grant) 26/08/2013 14:47

Never admit to being lost, even if you're not sure where you are at the time someone asks you the question !!😀😀

Rourky 23/08/2013 19:39

TMIW, MD, Ally , you must remember Welsh miles are a tad longer than those over the border.

Pear Drop (Sarah) 23/08/2013 13:39

Haha, just seen this on bbc website, is this what you meant by trying to make the terrain fit the map? 🙂😀

Blue John 23/08/2013 12:46

When walking in the Welsh mountains at night for a reconnaisance use a map of Snowdonia not Scotland thus avoiding a call out of the local Mountain Rescue Team (see Metro 23rd Aug) 🙂🙂

Morningdawn 22/08/2013 22:35

😀 😀 😀
Sorry Andy, was my first winterwonderland walk

wanderer47 22/08/2013 22:15

if you have crampons make sure they fit the boot and you know how to put them on.before you go out in winter

Pear Drop (Sarah) 22/08/2013 20:43

🙂🙂🙂🙂

Blue John 22/08/2013 20:37

Not so much the wrong direction anymore Sarah, a scary journey at times maybe but very rewarding 🙂🙂

The Mind is Willing 22/08/2013 20:35

MD and Ally your first comments the guys on this site use a lot!!!! 😋😀 So my words of wisdom are. Have no evening plans and never believe what they tell you!!! 😈😈😈

milvus 22/08/2013 20:20

Very true words Sarah68 🙂

Pear Drop (Sarah) 22/08/2013 16:43

Thank you preggy47, at least somebody appreciates my sensitive side lol 😀
MD yes on reflection you could be right, I should be more careful 😀😀

Morningdawn 22/08/2013 16:37

Oops should say out not put 🙂

Morningdawn 22/08/2013 16:36

Oh no Sarah, my next one will now have to be Never ask Minty to use his imagination while put walking, especially if you are a female, it just wouldn't be safe 😀 😀 😀

preggy47(Andy) 22/08/2013 16:09

nice metaphor sarah, think it fits life perfectly

Pear Drop (Sarah) 22/08/2013 15:15

Hello mints, don't laugh at me, I was trying to be deep and meaningful and enigmatic 😀😀!
"Don’t think the first mountain you see is the one you’re aiming at" applies just as well to a a day in my office as a day on the fells at the moment. And the thought of a pub dinner at the end of it is the only thing that keeps me in employment!! 😀😀
And as for "If you think you are going in the wrong direction…you probably are", well that covers my rocky journey from wedded bliss to singledom quite nicely. Use your imagination man!!
😀😀😀

Pear Drop (Sarah) 22/08/2013 13:09

Reading BJ's original post again, it could all be a bit of a metaphor for life really couldn't it 🙂🙂

JW 22/08/2013 10:30

Ensure there is a Tea room en-route 🙂

walklovemyson 22/08/2013 10:28

Very important OD rules, do not forget a (or more) cake stop en route or bring cakes for picnic.😈😈😈

Tinks 22/08/2013 08:58

Always remember a bridge shot 😀

Morningdawn 22/08/2013 08:33

In cases of extreme bad weather conditions,ie soaked to the skin, blistered feet or breathlessness it is imperative you always..
SMILE for the camera 😀 😀 😀

landranger68 22/08/2013 08:30

Never leave a note in the Car stating where you are going. The potential Thieves will know how long they have got🙂

Blue John 22/08/2013 06:29

Has anyone got a signal on their mobile? 🙂

Tinks 21/08/2013 22:50

Never think your nearly at the top there is always more to climb when you get there 😉

Ally & Dave 21/08/2013 22:33

Never believe someone who says "Its just around the next corner"!!

alpine hiker 21/08/2013 21:52

Whatever the weather never go in to the mountains without your waterproofs. Never take them out of your rucksack.

Morningdawn 21/08/2013 21:39

It is never as far as you think, its usually much further

Pear Drop (Sarah) 21/08/2013 21:15

Don't wee in the bracken or you'll get a tick in your bum 😀😀

MadMag 21/08/2013 21:12

Don't turn round and walk backwards whilst talking to those behind, you're bound to fall in a hole or over a rock.
