Yes great knowledge Doug. Re the route it's easy and not necessary to use a guide. I have the challenge walk bug now but will try a 60 miler before I go for the double dirge....
Re dates how would Saturday 26.5 suit, with a 4 or 5 am start? It's a bank holiday weekend.
I can organise backup meeting us at 4 points for extra water food etc. Depending on the numbers we can get a mini bus back or I can arrange a couple of cars for lifts.

A there and back is known as a double dirge. The dirge was the song they sang to accompany the walk across with the coffin. You have 24 hors to do it in to claim your trophy. And Christ receive they soul.😈

if I remember you do it in a day and there is some sort of badge in the shape of a coffin - because that is what the walk is about taking coffins across the moors - not sure where you get if from tho'

No you're right we don't need a guide, the route to Blakey Ridge is easy and it's straightforward after that, my map reading skills aren't great but if someone else's are then job done! A 14 or 16 seater minibus back from Ravenscar is about ?75 and s friend of mine is happy to do back up. So now we just have to choose a date.

I did this many years ago - ended up with blisters! - I did end of June - so light held - we started around 6am - so if good map readers do you need a guide - I seem to remember it was a fairly straight forward walk.

I am down to go to Morocco around that time. I had to abandon camping just south of there last auguat bank holiday as was being eaten alive. Is a guide necessary if it's light?

I have been rated to death by the midges, we walked into a bank of them on Saturday, I have no aches or pains but am covered in bites.
The guide we had on Saturday can only take us across on the last weekend in June, which will be the lightest part of the year. Would that work for you?

I may be up for this as if I don't do it soon I never will. May sounds OK, plenty of daylight hours. Fewer midegs in May as well.
